An All-Star Tribute To Elton John - The 2009 Sydney World AIDS Day Concert

A host of pop stars, musical theatre performers and cabaret darlings are set to celebrate the music of legendary singer/songwriter Elton John at this year’s Sydney World AIDS Day concert.

Pop sensation Ricki-Lee Coulter will head an all-star lineup which includes Paul Capsis, Rhys Bobridge, iOTA, Shauna Jensen, Rob Mills (Wicked), Virginia Gay (All Saints), David Harris (Little Women, Miss Saigon) and drag diva Courtney Act.

Playing for one night only at the Seymour Centre in Chippendale, the bill will also include Michael Cormick, Genevieve Lemon, Hayden Tee, The Super Supremes, Monique Montez, Chi Chi and Cha Cha Lombardo, Tim Draxl, Nathan Brake, Sophia Ragavelas, Flip Simmons and Ben Giraud.

All performers will be backed by the 30-piece Sydney International Orchestra.

Concert creator Trevor Ashley will also direct the show. Craig Renshaw has signed on as musical director and Peter Eyers will host the gala performance.

All performers and musicians are doing the show for free with all proceeds helping ACON (formerly AIDS Council of NSW) provide essential health promotion services for people with HIV.

ACON Events Coordinator David Wilkins says the music of Elton John is a natural choice for Sydney’s World AIDS Day concert.

“Elton John is not only famous as a composer and performer, he’s also renowned for his charity work in relation to HIV/AIDS,” he says.

“His songs have entertained millions of people all around the world and his ability to raise funds for and awareness of HIV/AIDS has inspired millions more.

“Elton John’s wonderful music being performed by so many great entertainers and all backed by a 30 piece orchestra will produce a truly memorable show for people of all ages.”

Mr Wilkins says this year’s concert follows the success of last year’s inaugural event. “The support we received last year was overwhelming and we now look forward to making this year’s show even bigger and better.”
