Same-Sex Couples Now Recognised Under Commonwealth Law

Following the passage of the Rudd Government’s bills at the end of 2008, same-sex couples in Australia will be given new entitlements and responsibilities across a wide range of federal areas in 2009. Starting from 1 January, gay and lesbian couples will be considered as “families” for the purpose of accessing the Medicare and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Safety Nets. Surviving same-sex partners of Australian veterans may now apply for the veteran’s affairs pensions.
