Drug Use, Dependence and Mental Health Among GLB People Reporting Regular Methamphetamine Use

ACON and NDARC are pleased to present the findings of a joint study that explored issues around drug use and mental health for gay, lesbian and bisexual people in Sydney, with a focus on regular methamphetamine use. Community perceptions about drug treatment services were examined, as were treatment providers’ experiences regarding their own service provision to GLBT clients.
Elevated rates of problematic methamphetamine use and dependence were identified among study participants, however there was relatively low uptake of treatment services.
The report provides a set of practical recommendations for drug treatment and other health agencies that work with members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
This research project was funded through a NSW Health Non Government Organisation Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Research Grants Program.
Print copies of the report are available upon request.
