Magic Mushrooms

What are magic mushrooms?

  • A variety of fungi containing the psychedelics psilocybin or psilocin
  • Usually taken orally (raw, cooked or brewed)
  • Produce significant physical, visual and perceptual changes
  • Are usually small brown or tan mushrooms which can be easily mistaken for any number of non-psychoactive, inedible or poisonous mushrooms (this makes sourcing magic mushrooms somewhat hazardous)
  • The primary distinguishable feature of most 'magic' or psilocybin mushrooms is that they bruise blue when handled

Law

Illegal in Australia (because they contain psilocybin and psilocin which are illegal substances)

Effects

Onset

  • 30 minutes - 2 hours (depending on how much and how recently one has eaten)

Duration

  • 4-6 hours

For many people there is an additional period of time (2-6 hours) where it is difficult to go to sleep and there is definitely a noticeable difference from everyday reality, but which is not strong enough to be considered 'tripping'.
