Racism

Many people are made to feel inferior because of their sexuality. Racism is as hurtful and offensive as homophobia. However, many GLBT people experience racism from within the community.

Examples of racism

  • Making jokes centred on someone’s race
  • Making assumptions based on race
  • Making negative comments or gestures based on race
  • Excluding people based on race

Support diversity

  • Check In - do you pre-judge others?
  • Stand Up - stand up against racism when it’s safe to do so
  • Seek support - Is your experience of racism is causing you to be stressed, anxious or depressed? Maybe our friendly and understanding counsellers here at ACON can help.

Would You Wear It?

Would You Wear It? is a social awareness campaign developed by ACON in consultation with local Asian, Arabic and Aboriginal communities. The campaign asks us to challenge our own and others’ ideas about race so we can all enjoy a community where everyone is accepted and respected.
