Same-Sex Domestic Violence Conference 2009: Perspectives and Progress
'Outing' the hidden issue of SSDV
Research shows that domestic violence is as prevalent among gay and lesbian communities as it is in the wider community. However, there remain significant gaps in data collection and issues with service provision and accessibility for people experiencing same sex domestic violence (SSDV).
The need to address the alarmingly high incidence of SSDV remains a real and formidable challenge. Within and beyond the LGBT communities are individuals with the knowledge, experience and skills needed to make significant headway in addressing the incidence and impact of SSDV.
The second biennial SSDV conference is an excellent and rare opportunity for all interested stakeholders to benefit from, and contribute to, the shared pool of expertise in this field. This will enhance the standards of clinical care, research and service provision. Through networking and sharing ideas we will be more able to identify and address the needs of the GLBT communities and individuals affected by SSDV.
Topics that will be explored during the conference include:
- Domestic violence, same-sex couples and children
- Same-sex couples and Apprehended Violence Orders
- Safety planning within the context of SSDV
- The relationship between masculinity and gay men's experience of SSDV
Presenters at the conference include:
- The Hon. Verity Firth, MP, NSW Minister for Education and Training and Minister for Women
- Associate Professor Dr. Jude Irwin, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney
- Dr. Matthew Ball, Associate Lecturer, School of Justice, Queensland University of Technology
- Jack Draper, Lesbian Community Worker, WILMA Women’s Health Centre
