Red Ribbon Appeal

Recent advances in HIV treatments and testing technologies mean we can now end the HIV epidemic here in Australia by getting people to test more, treat early and stay safe.

The Ending HIV Red Ribbon Appeal raises money for community-based initiatives that aim to eliminate the transmission of HIV in NSW by 2020.

The Appeal is conducted by ACON (formerly AIDS Council of NSW), a leading NSW-based NGO specialising in HIV prevention, care and support.

You can help out by making a donation, buying Red Ribbon merchandise or volunteering to sell ribbons on street, in your workplace or at your school.

SYDNEY

ENDING HIV RED RIBBON APPEAL
Fri 29 Nov + Sun 1 Dec / selected locations + online

On the Friday before and on World AIDS Day, volunteers will be selling red ribbons ($2), wristbands ($5), enamel pins ($5) and diamante pins ($10) at selected locations throughout Sydney. And in the lead-up to World AIDS Day, Red Ribbon merchandise can be purchased from businesses displaying Red Ribbon boxes or donations can be made via the official Ending HIV Red Ribbon Appeal web site: www.endinghiv.org.au

 

WAD2013_atestFREE POP UP RAPID HIV TESTING
Wed 27 Nov - Sun 1 Dec / Taylor Sq, Darlinghurst / Various times

ACON is taking its a[TEST] rapid HIV testing service to the streets with a special pop up testing site at Taylor Square at Darlinghurst in the lead up to World AIDS Day. In around 30 minutes, clients will be able to get a test result as well as sexual health advice from the friendly a[TEST] staff.
No appointments necessary - just walk up and get tested. Wed - Fri: 4pm - 7pm; Sat and Sun: 12pm - 6pm.

 

TRANNY TRIVIA
Wed 27 Nov / Kinselas / 7:30pm

Penny D & Conchita Grande, hosts of Kinselas' popular Tranny Trivia night, will be collecting donations from guests and patrons + Kinselas in-house dumpling bar Johnny Wong's will be selling dumplings from 6pm with 50% of proceeds going to the Ending HIV Red Ribbon Appeal.

The downstairs stage at the The Midnight Shift on Oxford St, Darlinghurst will be transformed into a kissing booth.
It's time to live that fantasy of planting one on Maxi Shield, Decoda Secret, or one the sexy dancers or bartenders. All donations go to the Ending HIV Red Ribbon Appeal. Break your chap stick out from 10pm.

Special World AIDS Day edition of the popular cabaret night featuring 2hrs of an an all-star line-up of Aussie musical theatre and cabaret talent including Trevor Ashley, iOTA, Lucy Maunder, Amanda Harrison, Cath Alcorn, Bev Kennedy and some special surprise guests, plus bid on some amazing live auction items including VIP opening night packages to Les Miserables and Strictly Ballroom.

TREATMENTS BY THE SEA

Free workshop for people with HIV. The workshop will include the latest information about HIV, how to reduce the complications of HIV, and hints and tips to stay well and healthy. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided. Numbers for the workshop are limited.

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA SCREENING

A special community screening of Stephen Soderburgh's biopic of Liberace, one of the most flamboyant entertainers of last century (rated M). Lucky door prize and other great prizes for Best Dressed. Hosted by the fabulous Tobin Saunders. All proceeds will support HIV programs and services in the Northern Rivers.

Byron Bay's famous lighthouse will be lit red for three nights to mark World AIDS Day. The switch will be flicked at a special ‘turn on the light' ceremony at the lighthouse between 7pm and 8pm on Fri 29 Nov.

The Civic Park Fountain, Newcastle City Hall Clock Tower, and The Obelisk will be lit up red to mark World AIDS Day.

 

 

AIDS AWARENESS WEEK DISPLAYS Sun 24 Nov - Mon 3 Dec / Newcastle Libraries
12 libraries in Newcastle as well as the libraries in Cessnock and Lake Macquarie will feature displays and resources about HIV and AIDS.

 

 

HIKE FOR HIV Sat 30 Nov / Eleebana Lions Park / 10am
Everyone is welcome to take part in this 4.4km hike around Lake Macquarie. Participants can ride, walk, jog, or skate and are encouraged to wear red and bring friends, family members and dogs. There will be a BBQ, raffle and information stall at the end.

 

 

 

MID NORTH COAST:

MOTOR CYCLE RIDE
Thu 21 + Fri 22 Nov / Port Kembla to Bega

Motor cycle enthusiasts will be hitting the road to raise awareness about HIV testing. The ride commences at Port Kembla Hospital at 8am on Thu 21, stopping at Nowra and Ulladulla. The ride continues on Nov 22 stopping at Batemans Bay and finishing at Bega.
