Drag Jam is a bold and exciting celebration of diverse sex, sexuality and gender. It is an Oxford Street (Darlinghurst, Sydney) event where anyone is welcome.
As a component of the ACON Anti-Violence Project's Oxford Street Safety Project, Drag Jam is a roving event which moves from venue to venue on Oxford St to address prejudice, homophobia and transphobia, promote anti-violence messages and generate community commitment to street safety.
Drag Jam and other Oxford Street Safety Project activities will be promoted on the new Anti-Violence Project’s Facebook Group: "Safe Spaces"
Meeting/starting at 9pm Sat 11th February at the Oxford Hotel (Taylor Square) the event is about people dressing in "drag" (drag being different to different people - boy/girl/queer or other gendered/kings/queens/subverted etc) and move together between selected (and sometimes random) GLBT venues on Oxford Street promoting safety strategies, anti-violence messages and information.
Importantly Drag Jam is an event which aims to address prejudice, homophobia and transphobia within the Oxford Street (Darlinghurst) area, promote anti-violence messages and generate community commitment to, and awareness of, street safety.
The first Drag Jam, which was originally called Drag Tag (April 2011), was the brainchild of a passionate young Sydney gay man Will Field The first Drag Tag was seen as a huge community, media and venue success and was supported on the night by the Taxi Club, Slide, the Midnight Shift and the Stonewall, Colombian and Oxford Hotels.
Building on this success, the second event - now called Drag Jam aims to be bigger and bolder and will be held on Saturday 11th February (the Saturday night before the launch of Mardi Gras Festival and Fair Day).
