Honour Awards 2009

Honour 2009

Now in its third year, Honour is an annual awards night which acknowledges two people who have displayed exceptional commitment to and leadership in NSW’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

This year’s event will recognise the community work of performer Graeme Browning (aka drag diva Mitzi Macintosh) and political activist Ken Davis.

You’re invited to celebrate Graeme’s and Ken's contribution by joining them at a fabulously catered cocktail party with quality wines, fantastic entertainment and a silent auction featuring a gorgeous range of fashion, beauty, dining and travel experiences.

Proceeds from the night will go towards funding a range of ACON’s health promotion services such as:

  • Counselling and mental health therapy
  • Home-based care for people with HIV
  • Emergency housing for people in crisis
  • Stopping homophobic violence
  • Reducing the harms of alcohol and drug use

A lot of this work is not covered by our government funding so we rely on the generosity of people in our community to help us raise the money we need to provide these important community services.

To help us raise these much-needed funds, we encourage you to bring along friends, colleagues and associates to enjoy a fun evening and to celebrate the unique character of our dynamic community.

The Honourees

Ken Davis

Ken Davis

Ken Davis has been active within the GLBT community in NSW since the early 70s. Following an early membership of Sydney Gay Lib, he co-founded Gay Solidarity in 1978 and went on to help organise the first three Mardi Gras festivals. Since then, Ken has been active in various GLBT and HIV-related organisations including the Gay and Lesbian Immigration Task Force, the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, the Sydney Star Observer, the Pride History Group, the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations and ACON. He is also a member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the SPI Reform Movement. Ken is one of our community's quiet achievers and we pay tribute to his lengthy and tireless commitment to GLBT rights both in Australia and overseas.
Graeme Browning

Mitzi

Graeme Browning +
Mitzi Macintosh

In the flamboyant guise of Mitzi Macintosh, Graeme Browning has been one of the GLBT community’s most influential performers and personalities for over 20 years. During this time, Graeme and Mitzi have helped raise millions of dollars for GLBT-related charities and organisations including almost $800,000 as the host of ACON’s weekly fundraising event Bingay. Graeme was inducted into the Hall of Fame at last year’s Drag Industry Variety Awards and was also the creative director of the Mardi Gras parade for three years. Over the years, Graeme has also used his talents as a performer, creative producer and communicator to champion GLBT rights, increase awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS and provide a positive role model for many people in the GLBT community.
