Dentures

Dentures can be either partial, bridges or upper and lower dentures. Since unwanted weight loss and malnutrition can be serious problems for people with HIV, eating and chewing a range of healthy foods is important in maintaining good general health. Dentures can also help restore speech, appearance and self-esteem where teeth have been lost or missing.
The '2.3 Program' can include vouchers for dentures for people with HIV on a pension, and the EPC Scheme covers dentures - if it is still running.
Denture tips
- Dentures should be comfortable and easy to insert and remove
- Dentures aren’t a substitute for good oral health maintenance. You still need to take care of your mouth and existing teeth to prevent further loss
- Dentures need to be regularly cleaned as thoroughly and as often as natural teeth
- Consult your dentist about any special need or problems you have or are concerned about
- If you have extractions wait until all the gum shrinkage and healing has taken place before having new dentures fitted
