Healthy Life + Update

Congratulations to the participants who completed Healthy Life + Spring 2009! It was a particularly strong group this time around, and many individuals achieved goals far and beyond what they had set for themselves. Our new gym partner, Gold’s Gym on Kippax Street, has proven to be an excellent addition with their spacious well-lit environment and dedicated staff. As an added bonus, Healthy Life + participants were allowed to enroll in fitness courses offered at the gym for the first time.
Our weekly seminars typically start with an ‘ice breaker’ or relaxation exercise to help everyone release any stress from their day. Then we go around the room and discuss how we have been going during the past week with our gym regime. Some of the participants have found gym buddies through the program whilst others are happy to work out by themselves. One of the purposes of Healthy Life + is to offer a safe environment where we can support one another in staying ‘on track’ for our fitness goals. Victor Fenech, our fitness instructor, helps to create personalised work out routines and is always happy to discuss progress throughout the course of the program.
This Spring we had two seminars led by Albion Street Centre student dieticians. The first one focused on healthy eating habits and general nutrition while the second seminar offered tips on how to read labels and shop on a budget. During monthly visits to these dieticians, participants seek further advice on how to meet their individual nutrition needs. Some of the guys were able to meet their weight loss goals and were delighted to see an increase in lean muscle mass. If you notice anyone at the PLC dressed in trainers and sports gear with a smile on their face, chances are they have just completed this program!
So what are you waiting for? Sign up today for an intake with the Men’s Health Promotion Team or Women and Families Project for the March 2010 Healthy Life + Seminar. Spaces are filling up fast!
