Next recruitment round
We've recruited this year and are at full capacity. We don't expect to recruit again until 2012. Watch this space.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to enter the service you must be a graduate of, or a final year trainee in, a three or four year tertiary counselling or psychotherapy qualification. AHCP also requires you to be registered with a professional body or organisation such as PACFA or GANZ and that you have conducted at least 40 hours of face to face counselling. AHCP offers clients a minimum of a 26 week block of weekly sessions, so we require your commitment, once a week, for those 26 weeks and we will ask you take up to 2 clients on the evening that you have been allocated. We support our volunteer counsellors by providing them with fortnightly group clinical supervision and two professional development weekends a year.
We do have rigorous experience standards for our AHCP volunteer counsellors. We pride ourselves on offering a highly professional counselling service that adheres to regulatory bodies' standards of practice and is able to adequately meet the psychosocial needs of our community. Engagement in a six month (or longer) counselling relationship requires a measurable degree of skill, knowledge, experience and clinical supervision in order to work through the sometimes complex stories that our clients present with in a therapeutic way.
