The 'gay mecca'

The 'gay mecca'

Sydney has a bit of a reputation for being a ‘gay mecca’, and it certainly does have a lot of gay and queer-friendly clubs, pubs and venues; often concentrated in specific areas.

Darlinghurst/Surry Hills has a plethora of clubs, pubs and venues that cater to the GLBT community, particularly along the famous Oxford Street (the same street that Mardi Gras goes along). A lot of these venues target men, however there are also many girls’ nights held in this area (as well as mixed parties of course). Not to mention that this area has a lot of queer-friendly cafes, shops and restaurants as well.

Newtown/Enmore is another area of Sydney with a lot of nightlife targeted at the GLBT community; particularly along King Street and also Enmore Road. This area also has a thriving and vibrant queer female community. You'll also find a strong GLBT presence in the majority of pubs, clubs, venues, cafes, restaurants and shops in this area.

Find out more

There are pubs, clubs and venues that cater to the GLBT community in suburbs all over Sydney, and all over NSW. For information on particular venues or events, check out street press such as the Sydney Star Observer, SX, Cherrie or LOTL. You can also check out samesame.com.au for listings.

If you’re under 18, there are also a number of queer ‘all-ages’ parties held throughout the year, check out the street press or samesame.com.au for listings.

Remeber that the GLBT community is about so much more than just the scene. You can also connect to the community through volunteering or joining our groups, joining a sporting group (check out teamsydney.org.au for listings) or a social group (go to pinkguide.com for listings, or check out the street presses). Also, you can make your own community, renewing your commitment with your existing LGBT friends by spending time together and taking care of each other. Remember, your community is what you make of it!
