Is drag your bag, baby?
Or are you more of an arty-farty type? The Young Women’s Project has run a number of programs that connect to and showcase the talent of our community through art. Each of these projects also created safe spaces for young women to explore ideas, experiment with techniques and expand their imagination.
2007: a group of volunteers organised a forum on gender performance called Tour the Kingdom. A bunch of famous and talented performers shared their tips, techniques and insider tidbits on the art of drag. Those at the forum got a chance to experiment with make-up, costuming and even created their own drag persona. Participants were also then given the opportunity to perform at Queer Central at the Sly Fox Hotel.
2008: an art exhibition was organised under the theme of “fantasy” which was launched with a smashing soiree featuring speeches and performances. The exhibition showcased 21 works from 12 young same-sex attracted women. The works submitted included video works, installations, photography, paintings, sketches and mixed medium submissions. The exhibition was dedicated to the memory of Cecilia, a member of the project who had passed away the previous year.
2009: a volunteer working group organised an erotic competition for young same-sex attracted women. Entries were showcased and judged at a one-off event called Arty Tarty Tea Party. The winning artist, Jade Muratore was then commissioned to produce the imagery for our sexual health resource, The Birds & the Birds: The Lesbian Sex Workbook.
All these events were designed, implemented and produced by young volunteers from the project. If you’d like to know more about any of these events, or to be involved in organising future projects, please contact us (pretty please – the project relies on strapping young ladies like yourself).
2010: The success of the Arty Tarty Tea Party came to fruition with the launch of the Birds and the Birds: The Lesbian Sex Workbook. The evening's events included quirky games, delectable finger food, and exciting performances by young same-sex attracted women. The resource is the first of its kind, produced to adddress a lack in relevant and accurate information on sexual health for young same-sex attracted women.
2011: A wild, jungle themed, night time event was organised in collaboration with a group of Young Women's Project volunteers called Sassy Safari. This event explored issues surrounding mental health and resiliance though music, art and live performance.
