People from trans and gender diverse (TGD) communities, their friends, families, health services and allies across NSW are invited to participate in community consultations exploring TGD health and wellbeing.

The community consultations are being convened by ACON, NSW leading HIV prevention, HIV support and LGBTI health organisation. Consultations will be held in Newcastle, Surry Hills, Wollongong, Lismore, Liverpool and Wagga Wagga.

The meetings will identify key issues and priorities for improving the health and wellbeing of TGD communities. Discussions from the meetings will inform the development of ACON’s first Trans and Gender Diverse Community Health Strategy.

The strategy, to be released in 2019, will outline ACON’s approach to addressing barriers in TGD health by setting out the issues, priorities, actions and partnerships necessary to support the care, wellbeing and inclusion of TGD people. It will also set out key actions required across health, community and legal systems to advance the health and wellbeing of people with TGD experiences.

Teddy Cook, ACON Regional Outreach Development Manager and Co-Chair of ACON’s Trans and Gender Diverse Advisory Group, said the meeting presented an important opportunity to shine a light on trans and gender diverse health issues.

“These community consultations will enable us to explore key health priorities for trans and gender diverse people, and will help inform ACON’s forthcoming Trans and Gender Diverse Community Health Strategy, which will seek to address barriers and health inequalities experience by TGD communities,” Cook said.

“We’re calling on all trans and gender diverse people, their friends, families, health services and allies to come along and be part of the conversation.

“We are particularly interested in making sure we hear from the full diversity of our communities including from Sistergirls, Brotherboys and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities,” Cook said.

The first consultations kicks off in Newcastle on Tuesday 16 October.

Auslan interpreters available on request.
