NSW’s leading health organisation for people of diverse sexualities and genders, ACON, has released branded face masks to support LGBTQ communities in protecting themselves and others from COVID-19.
ACON CEO Nicolas Parkhill said that since the beginning of the pandemic, the organisation has been working hard to support the the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ communities with evidence-based information and resources in line with public health advice.
“As a health organisation, ACON has been keeping up to date with the latest news and developments regarding COVID-19. We continue to take guidance from state and federal health agencies and urge our communities to follow public health advice and government instructions,” Parkhill said.
“Recent advice from NSW Health has recommended that people in NSW wear face masks in situations where they aren’t able to maintain social distancing, such as on public transport, and in supermarkets and shopping centres. As such, ACON has released face masks to our communities to safeguard their health while at the same time providing the opportunity to support our efforts in improving LGBTQ health.”
All proceeds from the sale of the mask go towards supporting vital ACON programs and services that improve the health and wellbeing of sexuality and gender diverse communities.
The ACON face mask is washable and reusable with three layer protection.They are non-medical grade and protects against droplets, solid particles and smoke. Masks are available for $15 each and can be purchased online or at ACON Surry Hills.
“It is most important that we stay informed and take decisions that are good for our health and our communities’ health. We know how to look after ourselves and each other, and now is an important time for that,” Parkhill said.
“We must all help slow the spread of the COVID-19. Wearing a face mask is an effective method in preventing the spread of coronavirus that all of us can incorporate into our lives.”
Parkhill added that face mask are not a substitute for other COVID-19 prevention strategies, and urged people to continue following public health guidelines.
“Face masks are only one of several steps to stop the spread of this highly contagious virus. By practising good hygiene, observing physical distancing measures and complying with lockdown restrictions, we can continue to protect our health and the health of our communities.”
