ACON is celebrating GiveOUT Day on 15 October, a national day of giving that unites rainbow communities across Australia to raise money for LGBTQ+ projects and charities. Since its launch in 2016, GiveOUT has raised over $150,000 and supported dozens of Australian LGBTQ+ organisations.
In the lead up to, and on GiveOUT Day, ACON will be raising money for our mental health programs and services. Demand for our counselling and client services have increased significantly because of the pandemic, and continues to do so. At the same time, the pandemic has impacted our ability to fundraise with the cancellation of events.
But in times of crisis, LGBTQ+ communities are quick to chip in, ensuring those in distress and needing assistance are getting the support they need. Even in these difficult times, these acts of kindness reminds us that vulnerable LGBTQ+ people can count on others in their communities.

LGBTQ people already experience significant health disparities, which can be amplified during times of crisis. In fact, as a result of the pandemic, our communities were impacted by elevated rates of distress and hardship. During COVID-19, 54% of LGBTQ people experienced more mental health issues compared to 44% of the general population.
But our communities have the power to make a difference. GiveOUT Day is a powerful reminder that even though we all have different levels of charitable capacity and motivations for giving, every members of our communities can make that contribution which can have a positive impact.
